Venus Lukic will present a solo show this coming week (15-20 August, 2016) at Palsa Beer Salon and Gallery. The work that she will be showing forms part of her residency program with Art Space Jang and will also feature collaborative pieces created within this space, by both artists and novices alike.

This exhibition is presented by the Daejeon Arts Collective as the first in a new cycle of mini and solo shows that will be happening throughout the year.

We caught up with her to find out a little more about her solo show and what to expect.

What is the focus of this body of work?

I wanted to use this residency as a platform for exploring what collaboration could look like in my work, mixed in with an element of chance.

The focus piece of this exhibition explores your experience of happiness since moving to Korea in 2010, why did you choose to have other artists collaborate with you on such a (potentially) personal piece?

Happiness is subjective; it changes as your perspective does.  The dates represent times I had traveled back to my home country and were used as neutral markers. I thought that other artists might have specific memories relating to those marked times of the previous years. So, I wanted to encourage those contributors to take part by reflecting on this specific selection of years and dates.

You are currently in residency with Art Space Jang, what is the duration of it?

It began in May of this year and will end in November. I’m in the thick of it at the moment- this kind of defining point where I will begin to strengthen my concept and presentation more and experiment less. From now is the point where writing begins to play a more important role in my process.

How do you feel Korea has influenced your work?

Korea has influenced my work immensely. I’ve had the opportunity to join several residencies here that have shaped my work. I have been able to play the role of the outsider here in Korea exploring a culture unique to my own, and also looking back at my home country culture in a new context. Korea’s focus on community has played a defining role in my work, and living abroad for an undetermined period of time has influenced the type of support/ surface I use in my work to be of a more nomadic quality.

이 작업에서 어떠한 부분을 중점적으로 보고있는지?

이번 레지던시를 플랫폼의 형태로 사용하고 싶었고 공동의 작업이 나의 작업에서 어떠한 모습을 보일지, 우연의 요소들은 어떻게 섞여지는지에 대한 실험을 중점적으로 보고 있다.

이 전시에 중심이 되는 당신의 작업에서 한국으로 2010년에 이주하여 행복한 경험들을 보여주는데 상당히 사적인 작업인듯한데 왜 다른 작가와 공동 작업을 하는지?

행복함은 주관적이다; 바라보는 관점에 따라 변한다. 날짜는 시간을 나타내는데 내 고향으로 돌아갔을 때의 행복함은 중립으로 표시를 해야 했다. 최근 연도의 시간은 다른 작가들에게 특정한 기억들의 관계가 있을 거라 생각했다. 그래서 참여자들이 특정하게 선택된 날짜들과 연도들에 비추어 보길 원했다.

레지던시 프로그램이 진행되는 곳은 어디인가요? 그리고 언제까지인가요? 

현재 대흥동에 있는 스페이스 장 레지던시 프로그램에 참여 중이다. 올해 5월에 시작해서 11월까지 진행되고 현재 작업을 바쁘게 다듬는 중에 있으며 작업의 컨셉을 보강하며 더 보여주고 실험을 줄이고 있다. 지금부터는 작업 과정에서 가장 중요한 역할을 시작하기 위해 글을 쓰기 시작한다.

한국에 지내면서 당신 작업에 어떤 영향을 받았는지?

한국은 나의 작업에 많은 영향을 주었다. 여러 레지던시에 참여하고 작업을 했고, 한국에서 (외국인으로서) 아웃사이더의 역할로 지낼 수 있었으며 다르게 문화를 바라볼 수 있었고 나의 나라에 대해서 새로운 문맥으로 바라 볼 수 있었다. 한국은 커뮤니티를 중점적으로 나의 작업을 바라보게 했고 해외에서 살면서 결정되지 않은 시간은 표면적으로 영향을 받았다. 조금 더 유목민적 특성의 이러한 점들을 작업에 이용하게 됐다.
