Glow brings together the work of three international artists, each exploring a range of elements that make up the lighter and darker shades of life, all in their own unique way.

각자의 작품 방식으로 삶의 명암을 포착해 나가는 세 명의 해외 작가 있다. Glow는 이들의 작품을 엮어 또 다른 방식의 집합적 해석을 제시한다.

Rosalie Osborn Knaack (Texas, USA)

Rosalie Knaack uses the symbol of the human skull as a reflection on life, looking at the light and dark within our own mortality. Knaack’s work often comes back to the Latin imperative ‘Memento Mori, Memento Vivere’ meaning “Remember death, remember life.” Looking at the history of the skull as a symbol of death across continents and cultures, Knaack’s two and three-dimensional works examine both the playful and terrifying shadow cast upon on our everyday existence. Within Knaack’s work are her own expressions of personal grief and anguish, along with an encouragement to embrace life and find joy, beauty and light each day without fear.

Rosalie Knaack는 생명을 상징하는 해골을 통해, 인간이 갖는 필연적 죽음의 빛과 어두움을 조망하고 있다. 그의 작품은 유명한 라틴어 문구’Memento Mori, Memento Vivere'(삶과 죽음을 기억하라)로 회귀하고 있는 것이다. 여러 대륙의 문화에서 해골은 죽음을 상징한다. 그는 이러한 공통분모를 바탕으로 하여, 우리의 실존적 일상을 유희적이면서도 괴기스러운 방식으로 덧입히고 있다. 이를 반영하듯 작품 속 작가의 심상은 자신의 개인적 슬픔과 번민, 그리고 일상의 아름다움과 삶에 대한 긍정을 동시에 포착한다.

Jennah Valk (Michigan, USA)

Jennah Valk’s work reflects upon scenes and experiences from her life living and traveling in Asia. Developing her own individual style she sculpts acrylic paint to build up literal and metaphorical layers within her work. Often using heavy black silhouettes with bright contrasting colors her work fizzes with light seeping from the puddles, hidden alleyways and dark corners of the environments she depicts. These direct multi leveled cityscapes often show the unclean, impure nature of the world around us, and the light penetrating it.

Jennah Valk는 아시아를 여행하며 지내 온 자신의 경험을 작품에 반영한다. 작품 내적으로는 아크릴 페인트를 조각하여 문자적이며 은유적인 층들을 세움으로써 자신만의 독특한 작업 방식을 발전시켜왔다. 또한 묘사하고자 하는 풍경의 웅덩이와 좁은 길이 갖는 음영을 밝은 색조와 짙은 검정 실루엣의 대조로 강조하기도 한다. 이러한 기법은 결과적으로 도시경관이 내포하는 불결함과 더러운 속성을 빛을 통해 드러내어 보이는 것이라 할 수 있다.

Andy Brown (London, UK)

The jewels, gems and elaborate frames painted, collaged and shaped within Andy Brown’s images of Queens and figure heads examine the decadence of a monarchy and icon. His use of bright color, bold shape and torn edges look at the beauty, majesty, and glamour of these highly recognizable cultural symbols, beside the legacy of being brought up in the UK. Within these images is a personal exploration of the artist’s memories, and feelings towards his nation’s traditions and history. Strength, unity and pride is apparent therein, along with questions surrounding notions of identity and the idea of belonging.

Andy Brown의 작품은 영국 여왕의 모습을 금은보화로 치장한 콜라주 기법으로 완성되었으며, 작품의 액자 역시 상당히 장식적이다. 이는 군주제의 우상화에 대한 역설적 질문이기도 하다. 또한 밝은 색체와 대담한 선, 그리고 거친 여백을 사용하여 영국이 쌓아 온 고도의 문화적 상징과 유산으로서의 여왕, 그리고 이것의 미학적 의미를 조명하고 있는데, 작가 개인의 삶에서 기억되고 있는 국가적 전통과 역사에 대한 인식 역시도 깊이 배어 있다. 아울러 영국의 힘과 연합됨 그리고 자부심이 작픔에 드러남과 동시에 자신의 소속감과 정체성에 대한 질문 역시도 함께 수반되어 있다.
