James Knaack is from San Antonio, Texas, USA; he has lived in Daejeon since 2007, teaching first at KAIST and now at Hongik University’s Sejong campus. James is presently studying in the graduate program of Ceramic Design at Kongju National University. Currently working primarily in clay and related earthen materials, James explores traditionally religious themes in a humanist context, crafting what he describes as sacred machines and tools for ritual self-transformation. His work takes the form of new rituals for old needs, accoutrements for those rituals, and documentation of their performance. James’ work draws from the traditions of conceptual, sculptural, installation, and performance art in an attempt to exemplify a mental process in which the audience is invited to participate for their own purposes.
